Censored Out Loud

My fellow blogger Bob LeDrew is part of an upcoming event that crosses over with the Blog Out Loud crowd. Bob’s a stand-up guy with a lot of interesting things to say about social media and communications. I almost never endorse events or products on this blog, but all Bob wants to sell you is a rocking good time, so that can’t be all bad, right?

Bob’s part of a group putting together a one-night reading of censored works – songs, books, poems, possibly even some blog posts. It’s called Censored Out Loud, and will feature several totally awesome and outrageous performers with plenty of experience at the mike. The idea is to draw attention to the issue of censorship, celebrate the idea that creation is powerful and should not be contained, and hopefully raise a little money for charity along the way.

When I think about all the nasty stuff I’ve said about Bell in the past for taking away my internet access for two hours, I can’t imagine how I’d feel if someone told me my words couldn’t be posted…ever. We take the freedom of self-publishing that comes with blogging for granted, I think, and it’s important to protect the idea that talking about stuff – even it’s controversial, even if it’s trivial, even if it’s related to poop – is how we learn and grow as a society, as a group.

The show takes place Wednesday, February 23, 2011, starting at 8:00 pm at the Raw Sugar Cafe, 692 Somerset Street West. There’s a cover charge of $10 (or whatever you can afford to pay), and proceeds are going to go to PEN Canada, an organization that fights for the right to create and read. Come on out and hear some great reading, and support a good cause.

Just a quick announcement that Blog Out Loud will be happening again this year. Yay!

I’ve bought my own URL for it. I’m not sure what I’m going to do with it, though. If you check in with this blog you’ll be sure to get all the latest news.

I’m currently looking for a place to have it – I loved Irene’s last year but I think we need something just a smidge bigger. Feel free to drop me a line if you have any suggestions at lynnturtlehead@gmail.com.

Many, many thanks to everyone who came out to BOLO tonight – it was a hot evening but a very good time. Today’s the day! I hope to see you all at Blog Out Loud tonight. Don’t forget that Irene’s has a full menu for those who would like to have dinner. And they also have drinks, for those readers who may be getting cold feet.

The evening officially starts at 7 p.m., but I’ll be there from 6 p.m. onward, setting up and (ooooh) handing around swag. So feel free to come on by any time – grab a name tag and a seat, and open your ears.

Come and See…Kids in the Capital!

Founded by Brie of Capital Mom and Lara of Gliding Through Motherhood, Kids in the Capital is Ottawa’s newest family-focused website. Local parents contribute a wide variety of posts, sharing some of the activities, attractions, events, and tips for things they love to do with their kids in this city. If you’ve got kids of any age, it’s a must-visit for ideas of places to go and fun activities to fill any length of time.

This spring, Lara started a photography series on the site. She shared her thoughts on how to take better pictures of children, and how to turn yourself into an impressive amateur photographer. She also invited readers to take part in her ABC photo challenge – to take one picture to represent key words she’d chosen for each letter of the alphabet. The photo group has really taken off, and many parents are now contributing fun and lovely photos of their kids. KITC will be displaying some of these shots at Blog Out Loud this year.
