See and Be Seen

Here’s the list of everyone who signed in at Blog Out Loud on Wednesday evening – hopefully it’ll help jog your memories if you can’t quite remember who that cool blogger was who was sitting at the next table. I know quite a few people missed the sign-in book, so if you were there and would like to be added to the list, just let me know.

Three Weeks

Just over three weeks to go until BOLO 2010! Our reader spots are filling out nicely and I’m happy with the turnout (readers, you will be hearing from me SOON, send me your picks, you scoundrels!). Still, we can accommodate two or three more readers so now is the time to sign up.

Starting tomorrow I’ll be revealing the highly anticipated reader list…one at a time. So check back often and find out who you can Hear Here!

Well, I was messing around with the new buttons and as a result, I had to replace the big one. So if you chose to incorporate the bigger button into your website earlier today, you’ll have to grab a new URL for it:

Blog Out Loud - July 7, 2010

Sorry about that. Serves me right!

Button Up!

First, just wanted to officially declare that you do not have to read out loud if you want to come to Blog Out Loud. People who want to sit quietly and just listen are most welcome! You’ll still get a nice nametag and all the swag that’s fit to give. Come out, have a drink, and feel free to remain as far away from the microphone as you wish.

Also, if you’d like to have your writing read, but are too nervous to do it yourself, we can arrange to have someone read it for you. We’re a full-service operation!

If you’re planning on coming out to BOLO and would like to promote it on your blog, I’ve made a couple of sidebar buttons. Here you go:

BOLO 2010

I finally, finally, booked a place for Blog Out Loud! It’s Irene’s Pub, located at 885 Bank Street (just north of Landsdowne Park, on the East side of Bank).

Mark your calendars for Wednesday, July 7, 2010. 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. You’ll be able to get a nice dinner at Irene’s, if you like, or just grab a drink, kick back, and listen to some awesome bloggers read their stuff out loud.

As with last year, photo bloggers are also invited to display their lovely creations.

Now, who wants to read?

I have no idea what to expect in terms of readers this year. Last year I had to cajole a few people into it just so I felt like I had a good cross section of writers. This year it could be the same, or perhaps, word has spread like wildfire that BOLO KICKS ASS, and there will be dozens and dozens of readers coming out. Oh, stop that snickering. It COULD HAPPEN.

So I just wanted to give a few guidelines up front so everyone knows where my head is at and what is going on. First of all, we can definitely accommodate at least 18 readers, so if we get 18 or fewer people interested in reading, then HUZZAH, my work is done.

If many more people than that come out, though, we’ll have to see. I would really, really love it if everyone who was interested in reading could read. However, there’s no way we can have, say, 50 readers and still keep it to one evening.

It’s probably not a real concern at all. But just in case, I’m going to set out some suggestions for potential readers:

  • you should read something you wrote and posted on your blog.
  • it should ideally be something from the past year (June 2009 to June 2010), since I started this thing so bloggers could reflect what kinds of writing readers might find on their blogs today.
  • you should be able to read it out loud in about three minutes (but this is quite flexible, I’ll let you know if I think it’s really too long)
  • I’d love to get your link/submission by Wednesday, June 23. If you’d like to read but still aren’t sure what, at least let put your name out there so I know you’re circling the fences.

If worst comes to worst and we can’t accommodate all interested readers…well, I’m hoping it won’t come to that, so I’ll figure that out when the time comes.

In the meantime, if you’re up for it, let me know! You can email me your link at, or leave a comment here.

Blog Out Loud Detox

One last big thank you to everyone who came out to Blog Out Loud. I had the priviledge of reading everyone’s post ahead of time, so I knew exactly what to expect…and yet, every entry was so much more moving, so much more hilarious, so much more deeply felt when it came from your own voices. I hope everyone had as much fun as I did.

For those of you who have been asking, yes, I do intend to do this again next year. I specifically held the event on the same weekend as BlogHer, so I wouldn’t feel so bad about missing the biggest blogger conference in North America (sigh). I must say, it worked too — now I actually feel sorry for those bloggers in Chicago who missed out on Blog Out Loud! Next year, however, I think I’ll have it on a different weekend, so there’s no conflict.

In the meantime, I’m looking for any and all feedback on what you loved about the event, and what you’d like to see done differently. Here are some specific questions I have for the crowd:

Did you like the venue? Was it too big or too small? Would you have preferred a restaurant setting where a meal was served?

Did you like the day and time? Would you have preferred a weeekend?

How was the balance between mingling and reading? Too many readers, too few, or just right?

One idea being tossed around for next year is to get a guest speaker — a prominent Ontario blogger to come and talk about the blogging experience. Would you be interested? What if it were on a separate evening — the night before or the night after the readings? What if it cost a few dollars?

If there’s anything else you can think of, don’t hesitate to let me know. You can leave me a comment here, at Turtlehead, or email me at

Thanks, and see you next year!
